Here it is: Your e-news payday!
Lots of news to tell you about in this issue!
First, we released a Request for Proposals for course redesign. The RFP was sent to the Provosts at each campus and is targeted toward those courses that have high incidences of D or F grades, withdrawals or incompletes (DFWI). Proposals are due July 10. We are excited about the opportunity to make a difference in course completion rates.
Next week, the IT team will be out at the campuses involved in the technical pilot of the UNC Exchange! Although all campuses are taking part in the Exchange pilot, only five of them (ASU, NCSU, UNCG, UNCP, and WCU) are taking part in the initial technical details. The new system will be installed at those campuses over the next two weeks and we will be ready for heavy-duty testing by month end.
The E-Learning Workgroup (part of the Strategic Directions Initiative) is working on developing policy for e-learning instructor preparation, keeping quality at the forefront and recognizing (1) that the three groups of constituents (faculty, student and support staff) are diverse across the state and (2) that the institutions themselves have different missions. So, our end product will, we hope, define policy recommendations that will allow a broad range of solutions and implementations.
If your campus / school / unit has a specific policy for instructor preparation, please share it with me. It is critical that we get as broad a reputation as possible for this effort.
Mark your calendars: On 9/27, Candace Thille, the Director of the Open Learning Initiative (OLI) at Carnegie Mellon University, will make a presentation here. From her website: “Candace’s focus of research and development is in applying results from the learning sciences to the design, implementation and evaluation of open web-based learning environments. Candace also currently serves as a redesign scholar for the National Center for Academic Transformation.”
This will be the first in a series of faculty professional development activities that we will launch next academic year.
If you have events on your campus related to distance and e-learning, please forward them to me for posting herein, or use the comment box below to tell me about them.
